This is a set I designed for the Berkwood Hedge School production of Newsies. Because I would be building the set with fifth graders—and because of the unique challenges of working in an old chapel—I had to keep the design simple and flexible, but still substantial. I started by pre-building three double-sided flats on wheels, and then worked with the kids to mask and paint the flats in a consistent style, creating a brick exterior on one side, and a theater interior on the other. The wheels allowed the kids to spin the flats and change the background easily during the performance.
